About me
This is the story of how I became a freelance ESL teacher. I was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, U.S.A. I got my bachelor in Psychology (minor in Criminal Justice) from Georgia Southern University and came to Maastricht in 2018 to get my MSc in Legal Psychology and LLM in Forensics, Criminology, and Law. When people ask me if I was afraid of moving to Europe by myself, I tell them I was much more afraid of staying in Georgia forever. After all, I’m not by myself - I brought my two cats, Minerva and Rudy! Living in Europe has totally changed my perspective on life - I can travel so often and easily, hear many different languages, and broaden my horizons. The exciting, multicultural, international lifestyle is definitely for me. At this stage of my life, the 9-5 schedule seems not to be a good fit. I realized that I have the skills, knowledge, and experience to become my own boss while doing what I love - teaching! It was during my work as a board member/project manager at the Refugee Project Maastricht that I discovered my passion for teaching. At the beginning, I inherited an empty English class - most volunteer teachers were graduating and moving on and most refugee students had lost interest in the class.
Subsequently, I interviewed, onboarded, and trained many new volunteer English teachers. I also obtained from a colleague a real school curriculum and then I watched our class grow from a trickle to a surge of new, inquisitive students. I enjoy nurturing and supporting my students’ learning by getting to know their situations personally and making sure I cater each lesson to their specific needs. I also love helping them use their newly acquired English skills to harness social, educational, and career resources in our community. As a thrice former uni student, I also understand how to apply this skill to newly-graduated students who may need advice about getting their feet on the ground. Teaching at the RPM has also given me a unique insight into the integration challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands, which has increased my intercultural competence and broadened my counseling skills. I am so excited to help you reach your English language goals, whether it’s prepping for an IELTS exam, becoming confident in daily conversations, or increasing fluency for your business needs. I have endless lesson plans, tips, and energy for you!

My first shot at teaching English happened at the Refugee Project Maastricht. This was also my first experience managing my own project and team of actual humans. What started as a totally empty classroom has blossomed into a huge group class with multiple spinoffs! Probably my proudest achievement ever.
